As American citizens, there is no greater privilege than the right to cast your ballot. Today being Election Day and all (if you haven’t already, please, put down this article and go vote. We’ll be here when you get back, promise), we know you’re definitely pondering the important questions like, “Is Meghan Markle voting?” Well, the answer is a little tricky.

The Duchess is currently in the thick of obtaining British citizenship, but for now, she’s still technically a U.S. citizen — meaning that she could still mail in an absentee ballot. However, it’s important to point out that the royal family doesn’t really get involved in politics. Like at all.

According to the royal family’s official website, the Queen has to “remain strictly neutral” when it comes to politics and is “unable to vote or stand for” elections. But it’s not the just the Queen who upholds this neutral stance — the rest of the royal family does as well.

People reports that Kensington Palace would not confirm nor deny if Markle had voted, instead replying, “no comment”. So, we’re just not sure.

While her situation is complicated, one thing we know for sure is that Markle definitely understands the significance of participating in any election. People reports that the Duchess has previously stressed the importance of voting back in November 2016 on her now defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, in a blog post titled, “Because You Must”.

“The right to vote is something for which blood, sweat, and tears have been shed; the struggle was endless for us to have this liberty,” she wrote. “I ticked the boxes on my absentee ballot last week, closing my eyes and thinking of my great grandparents who didn’t have this right (and thinking of how it would have changed the lives of my grandparents if they had). So on this day we urge you to exercise said right. Please vote. The fact that we can makes us the lucky ones.”

Given how outspoken she has been on issues such as women’s suffrage and education as a royal, we’re sure that Meghan will still find a way to make her voice heard.
